Commuter Student Association Events

By Lauren Archibald, Teresa Whitehouse and Ting Tseng

A number of students who attend the University of Scranton are commuter students. TheCommuter Student Association (CSA) helps to integrate these students with the campus.

The goal of CSA is to provide opportunities such as leadership and service, while also enhancing the commuter experience with a variety of events.

These signature events include Game Tournaments, Murder Mystery Dinners and theRooftop Carnival.

Commuter students can also look forward to morning coffee and snacks once a month on the second floor of the DeNaples Center in the Fireplace Lounge. CSA’s Coffee Hour provides commuters with an enjoyable wake-up experience while allowing them to socialize with one another.

This year marked another popular event, CSA’s fifth annual Rooftop Carnival. Pictures show students on the fifth floor of the Parking Pavilion enjoying games and inflatable obstacle courses, getting caricatures done, and eating cotton candy.

Michael McGurl, the Assistant Director for Off-Campus & Commuter Student Life, said CSA aims to integrate commuter students and make them feel comfortable. However, the organization is not just for commuter students.

“We’ve made specific efforts over the last two years to really reach out to residential students as well,” McGurl said. “One of our goals is to really try to integrate our commuter residential populations as much as possible so there’s not really that disconnect. We really want our commuter students to have the best college experience possible.”

CSA’s next event, Commuter Day the Royal Way, will take place August 9, 2017. Incoming commuter students will be oriented to the University of Scranton, while meeting other commuter students and participating in a scavenger hunt.

For more information, CSA can be contacted at (570) 941-6226 or res-life@scranton.edu. The club also posts frequent information through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

ANCHOR INTRO:  THE ROYAL ROOFTOP CARNIVAL WENT OFF WITHOUT A HITCH ON THE 29TH, AND ROYAL NEWS’ TERESA WHITEHOUSE HAS THE STORY

THIS IS TERESA WHITEHOUSE REPORTING LIVE FROM THE 2017 ROYAL ROOFTOP CARNIVAL.

THE ROOFTOP CARNIVAL IS AN ANNUAL EVENT SPONSORED BY THE COMMUTER STUDENT ASSOCIATION.

20-17 MARKS THE FIFTH YEAR THAT IT’S BEEN HELD HERE ON THE ROOFTOP OF THE PARKING GARAGE HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON.

MANY STUDENTS STOOD IN LINE FOR ALMOST AN HOUR TO GET THEIR CARICATURE DRAWN AT THE CARNIVAL.

UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON SENIOR AND CSA CLUB MEMBER ALEX GARDNER TOLD US MORE ABOUT THE EVENTS TAKING PLACE ON THE ROOFTOP.

IN CUE: SO THE ROYAL …

OUT CUE: HAVING A GREAT TIME

STUDENTS TESTED THEIR REFLEXES AGAINST THE SPINNING LOG, WHICH FEATURED A PILLAR THAT SWUNG AROUND IN AN ATTEMPT TO KNOCK THEM OFF OF THEIR PLATFORM.

I’M HERE WITH ERIC MOSELY, A JUNIOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON. HERE’S WHAT HE HAS TO SAY AS A FIRST TIME ATTENDEE OF THE ROYAL ROOFTOP CARNIVAL.

IN CUE: IT’S FUN…

OUT CUE: FOOD, MUSIC.

STUDENTS LISTENED TO MUSIC AND RELEASED THEIR INNER CHILD AT THE CARNIVAL.

WE MET WITH MICHAEL MCGURL AFTERWARDS TO HEAR WHAT HE HAD TO SAY ABOUT HOW HE THOUGHT THE CARNIVAL WENT.

IN CUE:  I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT…

OUT CUE: A REALLY GOOD TIME.

THE CARNIVAL WENT UNTIL ABOUT MIDNIGHT, AND USED THE ENTIRE ROOFTOP OF THE PARKING GARAGE.

THIS IS TERESA WHITEHOUSE REPORTING FROM THE ROYAL ROOFTOP CARNIVAL.

ANCHOR TAG: IN PREVIOUS YEARS, THE CARNIVAL ONLY OCCUPIED HALF OF THE ROOFTOP, SO THEY WERE GIVEN MORE SPACE FOR FUN THIS TIME AROUND.
